Conquering Volcanoes In Surabaya

Had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, we signed up to hike two active volcanoes in Indonesia. Sleep-deprived, long car rides, midnight hike have definitely taught us that beautiful destinations do not come easy. The great sense of satisfaction and achievement are what make this trip memorable.

Chasing the blue flame

We went to Surabaya, Indonesia during last year Chinese New Year. While everyone was flying back to their hometown to celebrate the festival, we chose to travel abroad because it was cheaper to travel than to purchase flight tickets home at a sky-high price. We chose to go with tourguide due to the limited time we have there so every moment was very precious that we did not want anything to go wrong. We chose Ijen expedition for the good quotation they offered as compared to other agents.

The things that were included for 3 days 2 nights

6000,000 Idr for 2 pax (SGD 566/ 2 pax)

  • Transport (Inc from airport, and around destinations)
  • Tour for Ijen Crater and Mt Bromo
  • Hotels
  • Jeep in Bromo
  • Horse riding, entrance fee and food are not included.

Sounds like a good deal right? No need to crack your head for planning, just pack and go! Our driver picked us from the airport and it took about 3-4 hours of car ride to arrive our hotel which was nearby Ijen crater. It was already close to midnight when we got there. We quickly took a short nap and woke up at about 1am for departure and started trekking at 3am.

As we got close to the crater, we were able to see blue fire which was created by sulphur under high temperature. Our our guide passed us gas masks to wear because the sulphuric smoke was getting thicker. Breathing became so much harder that we had to take several short breaks in between. However, we had to keep ourselves moving so we would not freeze to death. It was not what I have prepared for. The mountains was very steep with uneven rocks, thank God that our tour guide prepared us torchlights.
We actually went down the crater in the night and climbed up again to the crater ring. The place where the smoke coming from was where we saw the blue fire. There was a signboard saying that tourists are prohibited from entering, so take your own risk….I regretted the moment I entered. I felt so suffocated that I could barely breathe in because the air is so saturated with sulphur even with the masks on. Every breath made me feeling as if I was to die here. My tourguide immediately ‘evacuated’ us from the site. (Contsct lens made all these even more HORRIBLE, my eyes were so irritated and teary with all the suplhur smoke that I could not open my eyes)

I couldn’t imagine the lives of those sulphur miners ☹

We made it! Finally able to see our what were in our surroundings when the sunl came out and iwe were like ‘Oh my gawdddddd so pretty’! The sweat and mess did not matter anymore. We were so excited and I was jumping around despite still having soreness in my eyes and throat.

Nothing beats morning coffee with a great view. While descending we met the friends of our tourguide and they treated us some light snacks and coffee! If you are lucky enough you may encounter some 'coffee shops' along the way. We spent the day sleeping in our hotel and departed to Mt Bromo in the evening. Indonesia is so huge that it took us 5 hours of car ride to arrive at Mt Bromo. Not to mention he traffic and the driving there are insane!!

Stepping on the volcanic ash of Mt Bromo

It was already late night when we arrived. After leaving our backpack in our hotel and washed up, we left our hotel around 430am. We took a jeep to reach the Mr Bromo region.

You can choose to either walk all the way up or ride a horse to cross the sea of sands. We dismounted our horses as we arrived at the foot of Mount Bromo. The wind sometimes would carry volcano sand so we had to put on masks and sunglasses. After having our lunch, we departed back to Surabaya City and guess what, it took us almost 8 hours to get there. my bum almost cracked

Pampering ourselves for the muscle soreness

We need some pampering before going back to work on the coming week otherwise we would be so dead at work. Also, everything is so afforable in indonesian Rupiah even for a 5 star stay. Here goes our Grand deluxe room @ Ciputra World Hotel.  With Ciputra World Mall, one of the biggest mall in Surabaya connected to the hotel, it is so convenient for us to buy anything, from groceries to branded goods. We were even served with grasslemon drinks and local kuih during the check-in process.

Had an authentic Indonesis full body massage by the in-house service. I really love how everything looks so elegant in this hotel and I could not find myself unsatisfied over anything.
The biggest and grandest breakfast buffet I have had in my life. You literally just eat LIKE A KING. A meal here can easily exceed the calories you require for the entire day but everything was so worth-it!

The Chinese New Year high tea set

Located at the 7th floor of the hotel, 'The Lounge' offers high tea sets which are apparently quite popular among the hotel guests. Look at the 'ang ku kueh' and the edible red chocolate with chinese writing! It was so heartwarming to feel the 'new year vibes' when you are at overseas.

All you need to know before you go

I would really recommend this trip for a short getaway but it is something that I would not return for the second time. Reasons being

  • Night hiking requires certain physical stamina
  • The choke from sulphur, very bad
  • Long car rides
  • Not for you if you need a recharge because it is tiring

Nonetheless, we think that the beautiful views definitely outsmart the cons and it is for sure an unique experience to be that close to active volcanoes. So, it is completely your call to make the decision! :)
